About Lara

Although I was born in Penzance in 1967,  I moved with my family to the island of Lismore when I was eight and have spent most of my life in Argyll since.

Coming from a family of artists (my father, John Cheney, was a potter and a lecturer in ceramics and my mother, Pat Cheney, is a jeweller) I suppose it was inevitable that their influence would rub off on me eventually. I dabbled a little in working with clay but found that it really was not for me. However, having learned all the aspects of working within a jewellery production workshop whilst working for my Mum, I decided to go out on my own.

I decided to take some time out to bring up my three children. They have now grown up enough, I wanted to make my own jewellery again, so decided to give it another go as it is a passion that simply would not go away.

I work in silver and gold with a small range of traditional hot glass enamel . My work has been described as very organic and botanical. I have a great love and interest in plants which I think is evident in my designs and pastel drawings. I am also strongly influenced by the environment in which I choose to live – the movement of the sea, the ever-changing light and the spectacular scenery of the west coast of Scotland.
